What can prevent COPD?
DO NOT SMOKE CIGARETTES!
Most cases (80%-90%) of COPD are caused by smoking. Staying away from people who smoke or not smoking at all is the best way to prevent COPD.
Avoid Exposure to Environmental Irritants
It is best to avoid exposure to dust and fumes. Being aware of air pollution alerts and avoiding outdoor activities with poor air conditions can also help prevent COPD.
Avoid Close Contact With People Who Have Respiratory Infections
If possible, it is best to receive a pneumonia vaccination and yearly flu shots.
Have a Blood Test
Getting a blood test will determine levels of Alpha-1-Antitrypsin to see if a person is at risk of COPD. If someone in the family developed COPD but never smoked or had it at an early age, the person may have a genetic defect.
